Acer joined the likes of ASUS with its announcement of the Full HD 11.6-inch and 13.3-inch Aspire S7 ultrabooks. Unlike ASUS however, Acer is announcing touch support with the Aspire S7. More specs and details to follow.

The backside of the S7's screen is a combination of glass and metal. The entire chassis measures 12mm thin. The S7 can also be laid fully flat thanks to its 180-degree screen hinge for use in table-top touch mode.

Similar to ASUS and Apple, the S7 features a backlit keyboard.

The S7 will range in price between $999 and $1799.

Did they really get rid of the Fn row? That reeks of a Bad Idea™.

While I'm inclined to agree with you, the Fun row may not be as necessary in Windows 8. Granted, that's just speculation as I have not spent a great deal of time playing with it.

typically, for consumer notebooks, the fn row is the same as the numbers row, but with an fn "shift" button to access them. makes sense, as ordinary people don't even know what those buttons are good for.

I don't know that I really wanna be folding over a 13" laptop to use it as an oversized table top laptop, or that I wanna be touching my laptop's display in general... But I guess a lot of that hinted on Win 8 and the Metro side gaining traction. The price points are attractive but you gotta wonder what they sacrifice at $1,000 compared to existing ultrabooks in the same price range.

table top laptop = table top tablet
hinted on Win 8 & Metro = hinges on...

    Curse you lack of edit!

Wow, I must say I was not expecting something this high-end (at least from initial pictures/video) from Acer. Removing the function keys seems unnecessary and annoying. Same with including a glass lid, especially considering they decided to include the 180 degree hinge. Other than those gratuitous design choices, pretty amazing they were able to cram so much into such a great design. Looks to be a huge upgrade over the S3.

I was pretty set on getting the Asus UX31A when it came out, but this almost makes me want to wait. I say "almost" because Acer's shaky track record still has me skeptical that this machine will deliver everything it promises.

    1) The screen resolution is 1080p, did they say anything about ips?
    2) You said it is a touchscreen on some s7 models. Just because it is touchscreen does not mean it can convert or rotate the screen, is it like some older 15" acers where the screen is touchscreen but you can't rotate it around?
