5X- Fingerprint scanner, front facing speakers, lower price?
G4- micro sd, removable battery, 3GB RAM, WiFi calling (t-mo), better camera with OIS (nexus cameras have a long history of not being as good software and hardware wise), Larger, higher res screen (con to some) and at a $50 price difference for 32GB (t-mobile selling G4's for $479).
As a former N5 user, I'm very disappointed with the 5X. I'm also glad that I got the G4 with the extra battery and 128gb sd card promo. Hopefully the 5X will be similar enough hardware wise to jump start development for the G4 (probably not, but I can hope)
The preorders are live.... but unlike the N5 2013 there's still availability. Wow Google f'd this one up. Just also saw the 5X only has 1 single front speaker and no notification led. So remove an advantage from the 5X and all you have is an Google tax on pure android - which in my experience with my N5 is really a paid beta program. Just. Wow.
I think most people sync their iPhones by WiFi these days... That, rather than conspiracy theories about how Apple hates its customers, better explain their lack of interest in ramping up the speed of Lightning (or replacing it with some flavor of USB-C).
1. Built in software framework support for fingerprint and NFC mobile payment 2. Separation of core Android from OEM customizations to allow Google to update devices without going through OEMs and carriers.
LG has their own OLED displays, which they used in the Flex and Flex 2. Samsung is not the only source of OLED phones. Motorola made use of AMOLEDs in the Moto X (both 2013 and 2014), as well as the Nexus 6. And I'm sure there are some Chinese phones with OLEDs, both from LG and Samsung.
All of that is very arguable but this hasn't been a good two years for Android socs. I really, really hope Samsung, lg, and Qualcomm come out with great custom arm designs next year.
You guys all seem utterly oblivious to how these issues tie together. You glory in the fact that Android phones are so cheap, and competition so extreme --- then you're surprised that there's no money in the eco-system to pay for serious R&D of any form?
Those same Apple prices that you consider "robbery" are down-payments for the A10, the iPhone8, the Apple Car. You don't get one without the other...
It has ALWAYS been the case that serious R&D requires some sort of monopoly, charging monopoly prices. The best you can hope for is to ensure that the monopoly is spending the money well. The great monopolies of the past, the ones that really moved the world forward --- ATT till the 70s, IBM till the 80s, Sun and SGI at their peak --- we still praise with appropriate caveats.
If you get past blind mindless hatred, Apple is playing some of that role now. The details are different (they're always different), but Apple is the one spending the money today for the ideas that everyone will be using in five or ten years.
There's some to what you say, but Apple spends an extremely small percentage of their revenue compared to the average electronics company today, much less compared to the monopoly like behemoths of the past. (It's an even more extremely unusually low percentage of profit, as their profit margin is quite high now.)
Some of it is because they borrow ideas, some of it is because they buy it (which qualifies in a sense), but in any case they don't have the R&D labs of the companies you mentioned.
Apple car isn't going to ever happen I think. And apple itself denies it too, but that's not a reliable way to tell though.
Also, 80% of the world market is android, the chipmakers can develop for all phones, so yes there is plenty of reason to develop for android, and seeing that the damn A10 is based off a standard design it shows. And if you think Samsung doesn't do R&D and develops new stuff you must be quite detached from reality, and not a regular visitor to anadtech either.
This event has put this idea in my head that Google is happy to tout the iPhone as the high end phone option, and take the middle and bottom of the smartphone market. While at the same time not providing any of the Google features they gladly give to the iPhone to Windows Phone to not have a competitor for the middle and low end.
Apple gets the high end, Google takes the rest, duopoly. Hope the antitrust people catch on to this.
That what happen when Microsoft back in 2005 had 45% of the smartphone market with Windows Mobile but never kept improve it and gave up on it for New software - Windows Phone in 2010. Apple just took it over in 2007 and triple the price and the rest is history.
That slide comparing low light photography is strange. I think the 6S Plus looks much better at 23 minutes past sunset. The 6S Plus photo of the woman has much more detail (look at her hair) at the expense of the sky being overexposed, which is the right tradeoff, I think.
At 37 minutes past sunset they all take nearly unusable photos, the 6P is just slightly less unusable than the 6S Plus.
o ois, at these prices? What are they thinking? This suggests that aren't serious in making use of camera2 api.
Also, anyone catch the typo where they compare Chromecast WiFi signal reception? Love to know what a Chromecase is (I honestly looked at it for awhile and thought maybe it's what they are calling the new Chromecast (since they are calling the new device Chromecast 1st gen.
12:44PM EDT - Photos app works with Chromecast. Can cast photos to TV
About time. My fault for not researching the first Chromecast enough but I had thought at the time this would have been one of its most basic features. Finally.

What are the chances of a PCIE NVMe SSD like the iPhone 6S?kspirit - Tuesday, September 29, 2015 - link
Quite possibly in the negative. I think Apple caught everyone by surprise with that one. Like the 64-bit all over again.id4andrei - Tuesday, September 29, 2015 - link
Agreed. Just like Samsung caught everyone by surprise with UFS 2.0. First, all Android OEMs must catch Sammy, then go after Apple.KPOM - Tuesday, September 29, 2015 - link
Too bad Apple didn't add USB 3.1 support to the iPhone 6S. Syncing a music collection would fly.name99 - Tuesday, September 29, 2015 - link

2. Separation of core Android from OEM customizations to allow Google to update devices without going through OEMs and carriers.

AMOLED or LCD!? How hard is that to specify?!kent1146 - Tuesday, September 29, 2015 - link
It's not that hard to guess. It will probably be IPS. LG's phones use IPS, and not AMLED (which are typically found in Samsung-manufactured phones).jordanclock - Tuesday, September 29, 2015 - link
