Where is that person who said all the DRAM and NAND maker are not expanding their capacity and are acting like cartel?
  • StrangerGuy - Monday, July 30, 2018 - link

The cartel you speak is only expanding production only because they are spooked by upcoming mass production by China's domestic DRAM/NAND manufacturers with bottomless capitalization. If you think otherwise you are a fool.

    > If you think otherwise you are a fool.

hot tips straight from the arm chair CEO

Sigh. It is no wonder US and China are going into trade war or possibly a war. Both side don't want to understand each other.
  • StrangerGuy - Monday, July 30, 2018 - link

When everyone outside US agrees says your pres is an economic idiot, just wave it off as no one want to understand each other.

StrangerGuy, China is 3 years behind in bit density and will already lose tons of money. SK is not going to kill their profits when China doesn't care about losing money.

That's what they said about China on Li-ion batteries, LCDs etc in the past, nobody would want their inferior products until they undercut everyone else so much while the quality steadily improves.

2018 and people still underestimating China

Exactly, and China is increasingly forcing all countries to cut diplomatic ties with Taiwan. Nowadays, Taiwan only has diplomatic relations with less than 20 countries.
China wants Taiwan and a lot of their interest is driven by their desire to lead the semi industry. Do not underestimate China.

It's probably best not to prod at those kinds of people. They'll find a path of thought, however warped and in ignorance of reality, in order to continue to rationalize touting the idea that there's some sort of nefarious plot carried out specifically to make it too expensive for them to build their gaming computers that they can then brag about to people that don't understand technology or simply don't care, but are only listening because said people are friends, family, or a captive coworker audience.

Uhhh do you have amensia, or is your memory just absolutely freaking terrible??? The memory makers have done exactly what he was describing before with no qualms whatsoever & it was a massive deal when it all came out, and then the lawsuits started flying.
  • StrangerGuy - Monday, July 30, 2018 - link

Yeah with those multiple convictions of price fixing in the past and an looking at a multibillion fine for the same in China, how dare those damned entitled kiddos complain about prices.
  • namechamps - Monday, July 30, 2018 - link

Yeah expanding capacity only years after keeping supply artificially tight and in response to new competitors is 100% not cartel like at all.
  • mdriftmeyer - Monday, July 30, 2018 - link

They probably didn't realize a new consortium is in town and it includes SK Hynix, Apple, DELL and brokered by Bain Capital.

Apple didn't kick in $10 Billion to get the Toshiba IP for nothing.
  • Dragonstongue - Monday, July 30, 2018 - link

supplies are constrained they say this is unfortunately what is keeping price high.

hmmmm, last time I checked $40+ billion is not exactly pocket change, if revenue etc was "so hard to come by" they would not all be constantly expanding, revving up to better and better nm class while systematically ensuing pricing was as high as they can possibly make it.

"back in my day a $1 sandwich did not cost $100" but that is exactly what these "giants" are doing, but instead of it being a $2 "sandwich" it is a .0001$ crumb from that sandwich and they want $1,000 for it instead (none of them seem to be overly concerned about aftermarket resource management either e.g collection places for broken or unusable tech parts)

They do not build them cheap (price wise) they do seem to build cheap (for not lasting) but just touch enough to ensure is not worth it for salvage materials from (to be able to recycle the "rare earth" metals)

as long as they make better memory... like for desktop use. not just ecc 2666, but like 3000+ mhz ram that has timings that arnt in the stone age. jesus.
  • menting - Tuesday, July 31, 2018 - link

if you know of a way to do it, I'm sure one of the DRAM manufacturers would pay you a pretty penny.
