So have they finally put rgb on everything and made my nightmare come true. -ssd apperently -cables -psu -motherboards -memory -gpu -cpu(cooler) -case and its many fans -mice -keyboard -screen -headset
;p because sometimes you can only get the LED version anymore and in a few cases without the ability to turn the bling up which is extremely annoying if the PC is set in bedroom or areas where you want to minimize lightning
Think last time i had a issue with RGB were one of the first generation of corsair LED products , pretty sure if you google that you find many results which might be fixed by now by customizing , scripting , fixed software ,.... A other time was graphics cards LEDs with the controller software was so horrible. The other time was with some graphics card which during the windows 7-10 migration were software was still in some limbo state or you had to download like almost bloatware to turn them off. There are luckely graphics card these days with physical button these days.
Anyway in the end you had to like download extra crappy software , tweak or manually try to find the rgb wire and unplug it.
A other example but a bit off topic : only high end router allow with their default software to control LED. My cheaper ASUS and ISP modem combined have so strong LED that when you lay 2 layers of thick ducktape on them it still light the entire room at night. Tech companies seams to put stronger and stronger control LEDs that at evening your living room or bedroom can turn into a disco bar.
PS power , standby , indicators can have some ridicules strong LED these days. Again if you have like cosy thriller movie night or sleep it is just annoying ;p, But first world problems xD
I kinda freaked about glossy plastic all over laptops a while ago. Then there was reducing thickness to the point of non-function that annoyed me a little. The RGB LED thing is yet another pretty stupid entry in the journal of silly computing fads, but at this point I've seen enough and I just view this as a chance to poke fun at the world we live in and the people that make things like this possible.
I'm more annoyed with the chassis options being created. RGB is probably here to stay since it allows you to customize your color scheme at any given moment and doesn't really have an effect on performance (although some say it adds FPS and makes you better at PUBG/Fortnite). Choking off the airflow to your system just so you can have pretty glass side panels, is idiotic.
Even though I hate the LED mania. (e.g. my logitech mouse RGB is set to a very dim static sky blue color... my Dells monitors themselves are at like 9% brightness.
I don't think the overall energy use will be that much. Its probably much more if just compare old/inefficient devices like old PSUs/ AirConditioners, light bulbs.
So, for every improvement in power at the CPU and GPU level, it gets erased by adding useless flashing LEDs to every single component. Is this what it's come to for manufacturers to differentiate themselves? "We have RGB LEDs and you don't!" "Oh yeah, our RGB LEDs have a 16 way controller, yours is only a 4 way" Symbolism over substance. Yay consumers!
What would ever make you say that? My current primary system is almost 6 years old, and I don;t overclock. I have no need for the latest and greatest anything. As my now ancient but still reliable iPhone 5s would also demonstrate. OK, my system at home does have an SSD, but I'm not about to replace the 850 EVO with the latest one because it is marginally faster in some benchmarks. Thing runs everything I need it to do which is why I haven't built a new one, although when I go too long without building a system I get a bit itchy. But then I think of the money I'm NOT spending for things that won't noticeably improve any of the things I do and I calm down.
At least we have an explanation of why futuristic technology is depicted as glowing different colours in sci-fi: it's nothing to do with functionality, it's the aftereffect of "the RGB LED craze of the late 2010s"
Let's see when they can put out an RGB mousepad, RGB Wi-Fi antenna, RGB webcam, RGB PSU power cable, RGB thumbscrews, RGB HDMI/DP cable, RGB USB cable, RGB decals/stickers, RGB power and reset buttons, RGB PC case feet, RGB M.2 Drive, RGB USB thumbdrive, RGB external drive.

I'm not aware of any cases that have a truly unique design and LEDs that cannot be disabled. Do you have any examples?plopke - Friday, June 8, 2018 - link

I wonder how many megawatts of wasted power are used wordwide by useless flashy LEDs on everything that moves (and a lot of stuff that doesn't).milkywayer - Friday, June 8, 2018 - link

LED's use very, very little power. Think two or three watts for the most decked out system. They're nothing compared to any other PC component.rrinker - Friday, June 8, 2018 - link

Yet you'd still fawn over the 9999th iteration of a marginally better GPU.rrinker - Monday, June 11, 2018 - link

Exactly.I bet all those products have the option of turning off the LED. Or better yet... buy the non-RGB............
